Landscapes Embrace
There is a profound joy in standing alone in a vast, open landscape where the warmth of the sun, the whisper of the wind, and the stillness of the earth create a space of peace and belonging. In these quiet moments, I feel deeply connected not only to the land itself but also to the passage of time etched into its rock formations, shaped by centuries of erosion and weather. The Alabama Hills, with their rugged beauty, act as both sanctuary and mirror, reflecting the stillness within me while revealing the ever-changing nature of existence. My black and white landscapes capture more than the slow unfolding of time, they embody the joy of being present in it, of grounding myself in a place where history and transformation meet.
The rock piles and ancient surfaces stand as silent witnesses to resilience, reminding me of continuity, impermanence, and renewal. Circles and dots in my images symbolize the joy I feel in these spaces, subtle markers of a deep spiritual connection. Each photograph becomes both a celebration of nature’s endurance and a reflection of my own inner stillness. In the vastness, I am small, yet profoundly part of something infinite.
The creative process for Landscapes Embrace begins in the desert, where I photograph the land and gather plants that become part of the work itself. Using these materials, I create cyanotypes and lumen prints, allowing sunlight to record the textures and shapes directly onto aged darkroom paper. These cameraless prints hold the spirit of the desert, forming a dialogue between place, memory, and presence. Circles and dots emerge as emotional signatures of joy, born from my time immersed in the land, then woven into my landscapes to bridge documentation with abstraction.
I carefully select and place the colored lumen dots, cyanotype dots, and circles in collage, arranging them like gestures of movement, echoes of dance, breath, or rhythm. These bursts of color suggest joy radiating outward, animating the stillness of the black-and-white images. Editing balances contrast, texture, and tonal range so the work feels both grounded and ethereal, rooted in reality yet lifted toward the poetic. Each piece becomes a conversation between the resilience of the land and my own lived experience, a celebration of both nature’s strength and the joy of creating within it.
